College Park Airport Founded (1907)
The Wilbur Wright came up from North Carolina to train two military officers,
and it was the beginning of what was to become the oldest continuously operated
airport in the US, known today as the “Cradle of Aviation.”
Beltsville Agricultural Research Center Established (1910-1940)
In 30 years and government purchased 10,000 acres for the facility.
Columbia Air Center Founded (1941)
John Greene established the nation’s first airport owned by and African
American.
The Prince George’s County Genealogical Society Founded (1969)
Today it is the oldest Maryland County Genealogical society in continuous
existence.
George Wallace Shot in Laurel (1972)
George Wallace, a Southern Civil rights activist was shot in Laurel while
campaigning for the Democratic presidential primary.
