Act of Advancement of Trade (1706)
This act, passed by the General Assembly, reestablished Charles Town and
established five more port towns; Queen Anne, Nottingham, and Mill Town on the
Patuxent, Marlborough on the Western Branch of the Patuxent and Aire at Broad
Creek on the Potomac. In 1707 a supplementary act established the Town of
Piscataway at the head of Piscataway Creek.
County Seat Moved to Upper Marlborough (1721)
The growing community of Upper Marlborough started petitioning for the move
in 1718, and in three years it was complete.
Bladensburg Founded (1742)
Bladensburg was named after the first Governor, Sir Thomas Bladen.
Frederick County Erected from Prince George’s (1748)
The less settled western portions of the county were taken to form Frederick
County.
Declaration of Independence (1776)
John Rogers of Upper Marlborough sat in the Continental Congress that voted
to go to war for our independence from Great Britain.
Washington, DC Established (1791)
Land was taken from Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties to make the new
Nation’s capital.
