v     Founded in 1944, Prince George's Hospital Center is a care-teaching hospital center and regional referral center in Cheverly, Maryland. Led by Donald A. Foran as Chairman & Board of Directors, it is the primary medical institution of the Dimensions Healthcare System.

v     It's Trauma Center serves five counties in Maryland (St. Mary’s, Montgomery, Calvert, PG, and Charles). Prince George’s Hospital is also the only regional provider of sexual assault/rape counseling services, emergency psychiatric services and care for the mentally ill requiring involuntary commitments.

v     More than 50% of the patients at PGHC are without health insurance or are covered by Medical Assistance.

v     Health Services: PGHC offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient services; created with a patient focus.

·      Trauma and Critical Care: Its Level II trauma center has one of the highest survival rates in the nation. Board certified physicians, efficiently trained surgeons, technicians, and other specialists are on duty 24 hours per day. Additionally, the development of the Shock Trauma Mentor Program allows adolescents to see first hand what harm drugs, alcohol, violence, and reckless driving can do to the body.

·      Cardiac Care: It offers invasive cardiac surgeries, cardiac catheterizations, open-heart and angioplasties surgeries, and cardiac rehabilitation services. These take place in the $20 million “Pavilion”; containing new suites equipped with the latest medical technology. Prince George’s Hospital Center is the only hospital in PG county to perform open-heart and angioplasty surgery.

·      Surgical Care Center: 10,000 surgeries are performed each year. The Short Stay Center houses biopsies, cataract extractions, laser surgeries, hernia repair, and laparoscopies; as well as arthroscopic, reconstructive and oral surgeries. The comfort and convenience of the patient is preserved through suites, recovery rooms, and waiting rooms.

·      Maternal/Child Health: The hospital has the only designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Southern Maryland (Level III), which offers the best care for premature babies as small as 500 grams and 24- hour care by specialists. Parenting classes are offered for future mothers and fathers; teaching infant CPR and breastfeeding. Mom is also able to learn the basics of feeding, bathing, and diapering during her stay. DHS is in the process of constructing a new OB/GYN area, consisting of private rooms for mothers.

·      Behavioral Health: All of Prince George’s Hospital’s behavioral programs are represented through Dimensions Behavioral Health system; allowing patients to work with psychiatrists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, counselors, dietitians, pharmacists and social workers.

·      Sexual Assault Center: established in 1975, the center’s main focus is that the victim is never to blame for the assault and to help victims gain back control over their lives. Serving males and females of all ages, the center provides medical forensic examinations, helps with legal proceedings, and post trauma counseling; free of charge. Victim advocacy and educational programs for the community are also provided.

·      Partial Hospitalization Programs: Offered at Prince George’s Hospital as well as Laurel Regional Hospital, patients are able to participate in a psychiatric program but still receive the luxury of spending time at home. Individual, group, and family therapy, expressive and occupational therapies and psycho-education are offered. PHP services are up to six hours per day, five days per week and expenses are covered by Medicaid/Medicare. At Prince George’s Hospital, local transportation is provided.

·      Diabetes Treatment Center: On an outpatient basis, experienced dieticians, diabetes educators, and nurses advise patients through different types of counseling; including blood sugar monitoring, insulin self-management skills, oral medication self-management skills, nutrition counseling and meal planning, diabetes seminars, exercise counseling, stress management, and diabetes counseling during pregnancy.

·      The Center for Joint Replacement of Greater Washington: specializes in hip and knee joint replacement for arthritic patients or patients with a  weakened capacity of joints due to overuse. Each patient is granted a nurse practitioner from start of surgery to finish, a surgeon, a highly trained surgical team, a registered nurse, a case manager, a physical therapist, and an occupational therapist.
