Northampton Plantation Slave Quarters

Prince George's County Planning Board Beginning in 1673, Northampton Plantation was worked by the Sprigg family and their slaves for nearly 200 years. After the Civil War, the plantation was sold and worked as a farm until the 1950's. As a result, 300 years of African American history has been preserved on the site in the form of historical documents, oral histories, and archaeological finds.

The archaeology at the site has focused on its two slave quarters and has revealed important information regarding their archetecture. Additionally, finds of everyday objects have provided great insight into the lives of the slaves and tenant farmers who lived there.

Northampton Plantation offers a number of ways for citizens of Prince George's County to get involved in the ongoing archaeological research at the site. The Natural and Historical Resources Division sponsors a volunteer archaeology program at the site, in addition to providing opportunities for student internships.
