Tom Hendershott
Prince George's County Council Member for District 3
In 1971, I was the lawyer that filed the litigation, the case that HEW (the Dept. of Health Education & Welfare) brought against the public schools of Prince George's County, which resulted in a determination that the Board of Education was responsible for continued segregation in the public schools. That finding by our office led to the litigation filed by the NAACP in federal court, which resulted in the court order that imposed so-called forced busing as a mechanism to desegregate schools in Prince George's County.
I believed in desegregation and integration then
and I believe in it now. I believe it's what we have to accomplish in our culture.
We're doing it slowly but surely, and we will get it done. The best way, in
my view, to break it down is with people who go to school together, work together,
live together, get to know one another.
