On
a July afternoon the sun beams through the large stained glass window
of the First United Methodist Church in Hyattsville. When you first walk
through the front door it looks as if nothing is going on the inside,
but once you leave the lobby you will notice several of the ongoing activities
and some young kids walking in from lunch. A lot of them are part of a
summer program at the church called the Summer Institute for Knowledge
of the Arts (SIKA). There they hold lessons in steel drums, reading music,
and performance arts.
SIKA is part of
the nonprofit CAFÉ, directed by a woman by the name of Lorna
Green. Ms. Green has been running this program at the church for 7 years
now and plans on staying as long as there's a service to be provided
in the community. Ms. Green also informs people of her other programs
such as the one in Baltimore and the upcoming location in Langley Park.
She is very happy that now she can run CAFÉ in different locations
compared to before when she had to do her classes in her house. Ms.
Green also is looking for a lot of high school students to work with
the children in her program. Over all I think that this is a very good program because it deals with the musical as well as the academic of a lot of these young peoples lives. Also the church is very close to the subway station and to the different school in the neighborhood, which would make its accessibility rate high in convenience. If your child is not already a member of CAFÉ, I strongly encourage that you sign them up. The fee is only $50 so try to swing by to get more information.
