Bridget Warren and her husband Todd Stewart are co-owners of the cooperative book store, Vertigo books. Other independent "friends" of Vertigo bookstore include, "Chapters: A Literary Bookstore" in D.C., "Brystone Children's Bookstore" in Watauga, TX, and, "The Book Mark" in Atlantic Beach, FL. They chose the name Vertigo from the Alfred Hitchcock movie of the same name, because they wanted their name to pop out and be distinctive. They have been up and running since November of 1991. Before moving to College Park in April of 2001, Vertigo books was located in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC Bridget Warren was once an arts administrator, but she decided to come in this business with her husband. She says she likes this job because she enjoys the reading and also likes her customers. She says that her customers have very high expectations of them. They come in and ask her for something and they expect her to know what to get and where to get it. Customers have so much faith in her they even ask her what to give their spouses for their anniversary.

Vertigo only hires people who know what they are doing and who can stay focused. In order to work there, you would have to care and know a lot about books and the different disciplines they cover. They do help students get their community service hours. Bridget Warren is a very nice person who has made the bookstore a very inviting place to be. It has a good collection of specialty books on African-American history and literature and human rights and social change as well as a good supply inexpensive "bargain" books, an excellent program of guest authors who do readings and book signings almost daily, and they a knowledgeable, friendly staff. So if you are interested in book reading check out Vertigo books: a Prince George's County independent bookstore with a special style and a distinctive look. |
